Mobile and accessible cities:
An indicator framework to evaluate the integration of land-use and transport in fast growing Asian cities
Case studies Ha Noi-Vietnam and Wuhan-China
Equity in offering choices of transport modes and provision of good accessibility for all groups in society to urban public facilities is considered as one of the main criteria to achieve sustainable urban transportation. Lack of accessibility for certain groups and/or places and inadequate mobility are key issues of social exclusion. Mobility options for one group of people may cause barriers to other groups of people, hence restricting their accessibility to urban facilities. This causes that cities get fragmented into islands of mobility within which certain groups of people are trapped, unless they move forward in their mobility carrier and join the mobile (read: motorized) masses to exclude options to others again. How differences in accessibility by different transport modes and for different groups of people and places occur, how people’s mobility is affected by the existence of mobility “islands” and what the indicators are to evaluate social mobility-related exclusion in fast growing Asian cities such as Wuhan and Ha Noi are the main issues this research aims to address.
