The Second Global Shift and China's New Economy

by Professor Victor Sit
Director and Chair Professor
Advanced Institute for Contemporary China Studies, Hong Kong Baptist University

Abstract
In 1980-2000 there had been a shift of labour-intensive processing from developed countries (DCs) to selective developing countries (LDCs) through FDI, out-sourcing from the DCs, and an improved export-oriented policy regime in LDCs. China’s success in this First Global Shift prepared the ground for her emergence as a global economic power in the new century. At beginning of the 21 Century, Second Global Shift seems to be gathering strength. The paper examines the drivers of the new shift and the potential new economy that may develop in China in the recent decades.
