Summary

In 2005 the Group on Earth Observations (GEO), an international partnership of countries, the European Commission and international organisations, initiated the establishment of the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS) within the next 10 years.

With GEONETCast GEOSS can rely on a global data dissemination system which allows to continuously distributing data and information directly to end-users, within minutes after acquisition of the data anywhere in the world.

In its initial phase, GEONETCast is based on EUMETSAT’s EUMETCast data dissemination system. Using commercial telecommunication satellites and only requiring off-the-shelf satellite-receiving equipment and standard personal computers. This is a highly affordable solution and independent from ground-based telecommunications infrastructures. GEONETCast is readily available to users in Europe, Africa, North, Central and South America and will contribute to revolutionize the way policy- and decision makers will be making informed decisions on the basis of the best available scientific data.

This project aims at developing applications of GEONETCast for water resources management using existing ITC MSG facility.
