Holland Alumni Conference

5-6 november 2009, The Hague

On 5 and 6 November Nuffic organises the Holland Alumni conference at the Bel Air Hotel in The Hague. This two-day conference is a unique event where selected Holland Alumni from over 70 countries can reconnect and share their knowledge on current themes in 7 different areas of expertise.

Prof. Freek van de Meer formed together with Holland alumni a content development group who will organise the following session:

“Capacity Development needs in Geosciences; trends, gaps and scenarios for improvement”

In the morning, there will be a presentation and discussion on the latest trends in geosciences what are the evolving new topics like new energy resources (e.g. thermal energy), adaptation to climate change, etc. We want to put these in a regional perspective and see whether we can draw conclusions on prevailing issues in different parts of the world. Ultimately we also want to relate new geoscience topics to new demands from the labour market. What does the labour market need and expect from fresh graduates in geosciences?

In the afternoon, we would like to link this to the existing offering of geosciences topics at universities and to discuss what the gaps are, and how the faculties of geosciences of universities could be more linked to the practical reality of organizations working in the field of geosciences (like geological surveys, engineering companies, mining and exploration companies). this would foster a discussion on developing training into capacity building and ultimately sustainable and longterm development in the region.

Members of the Content Development Group are:

Prof. Freek van der Meer Chairman of the Department of Earth Systems Analysis, ITC
Ms. Drs. Sabine Maresch Senior Project Officer, ITC
